Bordering the yala national park to the east
is the well known bird sanctuary, kumana. As you
approach kumana you hear a rather noisy invitation
the sound of thousands of birds calling one
another. Here a large veriety of indigenous
aquatic birds gather from April to July making
kumana a bird watcher’s paradise. There are herons,
storks, egrets and spoon bills hesting in the trees
above, water hens, purple coot and jacana build
their nests in the swamp below.
From October onwards the migrants or the ‘bird
tourist’s arrive to get away from the northern
winter. They are attracted by the lagoons. The
tern, sandpiper, plover, duck and snipe are
regular visitors of these the snip is remarkable
for the marathon flight it makes all the way from
Siberia, although it weighs only about 120 grammes.
The migrant birds leave by the and of March.
Ducks are the first to go, The y make a fine sight
as they circle the land and move away in an arrow
head formation against a blue sky on their long

But in the developing world this problem has been all owed to continue, condemning millions of children to cretinism, tens of millions to mental retardation and hundreds of millions to lesser mental and physical problems.

On 20th September 1990, the world summit for children adopted a resolution to eliminate all new cases of Iodine Deficiency Disorders through the iodization of salt. Today a decade later, how close are we to achieving this goal!.

There are many kinds of flowers. Flowers are beautiful and fragrant. People admire them.
Flowers are grown around huts and palaces too. People like to grow flowers because the
flowers make the surrounding pleasant. They also offer flowers to their religious leaders.
People also use flowers to decorate their Horne for festival. They keep wreaths of flowers
to respect the dead ones. Brides and bridegrooms too adorn themselves with flowers.
Sri Lanka exports flowers like Anthuriums and orchids. Thus growing flowers is not only
an interesting hobby. It’s also a profitable business. In Sri Lanka there are many
botanical gardens where flowers can be seen in plenty. Haggala, Peradeniya and Gain Paha
are the wall known of these gardens.

Trees

Trees are very useful to all laying being such as humans and animals.
They help us in many ways and they provide food and medicine dives us
firewood for cooking. The timber is used for making furniture, houses,
and boats and so on.
If we do not preserve trees we will suffer in so many ways. If there
are on trees the land becomes a desert and human beings cannot live.
Trees preserve water. On the other hand trees stop soil erosion. The
rains falls hand on the ground causing floods and wash the soil.
Before destroying trees we must think the good they do. Trees keep
the environment beautifully. They provide us shade from not sun. When we
are tired we like to sit under a tree for shade and wind.
Trees absorb carbondioxied and purify the air. We breathe and give oxygen.
As such if you cut a tree. Plant two instead. Then it will make country
a beautiful place to live.

Sinharaja Rainforest

The sinharaja forest in the only undisturbed rainforest left in Sri Lanka. It is about gooohecrares in exlent. Many of the plants are very rare. Ovar 60% of the tree speces are found only in the lowland wet zone of sri lanka. If these species of trees are allowed to get destroyed. The world lose them altogether. So it important that much effort is made to conserve this, valuable and fragile habitat.
The Sinharaja rainforest is the largest rainforest reserve in srilanka. In 1988 the Sinharaja was made a national wilderness area. In 1989 UNESCO included the Sinharaja forest in the world Heritage list as the first national Heritage of srilanka.
The Sinharaja forest is home to many rare animals , birds, butterflies, insects, repiles and trees. Terns and mosses grow well as the climate is humid because of heavy fainfall.

Tropical rainforests are located around the equator the temperature around the equator is high. Hence the rate of water evaporation is high. As a result there is frequent rain in rainforests. They are found in south and Central America, Africa in the islands around Australia and Asia. The rainforests are important to human existence and surroundings. Rainforests are a rich source of medicinal plaints, food and useful forest products. They maintain about 50% of the plant, animal, bird, reptile and insect species of the world. These forests help to maintain a regular rainfall. They also stand as a buffer against floods, droughts and erosion. These forests produce a significant amount of the world’s oxygen.

Vesak festival

There are several religious Festivals in Sri Lanka.Among them Vesak is regarded as the most important religious Festival to Buddhist. It is held in the month of May every year. It marks three important events in the life of Lord Buddha. They are the Birth, the Enlightenment and the passing away of lord Buddha.
Most of the people observe “sil” on this day. They engage in various religious activities’ too.They listen to sermons and other religious talks.

The Olympics Games

The Olympics or the Olympic games began in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. it was an ancient Greek festival held at Olympic every four years to honor Good zeds. There were athletic, literary and musical co petitions. They were only for Greek mean women were not allowed to participate in them. There were only few competitions then. In ancient Olympic Games the winners were given wreaths of olive loaves.
Modern Olympic Games too are held every four years but in different venues. The first modern Olympic Games were held in a then in 1896, 2004 Olympic Games were held in Athens. But Sydney Australia was the Venus of 2000 games. In modern Olympic Games many events like arthritics, soccer tennis, swimming, badminton, boxing and Judo are held Gold silver and bronze medals are awarded to those who gat first events. Sri Lanka has won only two medals so far. In 1948 Duncan white got silver medal by coming second in the 400 yards hurdle event in London. Susanthika jayasingha coming third in the 200 meter rare won a bronze medal at Sydney Olympics.
Let’s with Sri Lanka get more medals in future Olympic games.

Paddy cultivation in Sri lanka

The staple food of Sri Lankan is rice. There fore paddy is cultivated during yala and maha season. Farmers have to work very hard to get a good harvest.
                         First water is dive red in to the field to soak in well. After that the field is filled and ploughed. Long a go buffaloes were used for this purpose but today more people use tractors. Because it is quicker and cheaper after the field is ploughed rides are made seed paddy is put in to the sacks and soak them from the water. After that it is sown in the field some times the seed is sown in a nursery and then plant in the field. The farmers be live it gave a good harvest. During the season it is looked after very carefully weedicides and insecticides are sprayed the field has to be
Manure too.
           After some time sheaves of paddy appear. Then the field has to be protected from birds. So a scare crow is put in the middle of the field to frighten the farmers the birds. After some time the farmers ripens and it is the time to get harvest season. The farmer comes to the field with his friends and relations to hares it they harvest the paddy with sickles.
           The men keep sheaves on the ridges and the women take them to the threshing floor. This is the opened space. It is cleaned and prepared for threshing the paddy is heaped in the threshing floor and it is threshed by a machine. Long a go this was done by using buffaloes after the paddy is threshed it has to be winnowed to remove the chaff from the grain. Then it is measured put it in to sacks and taken home the straw is bundled and sold but it doesn’t happen very often we can see straw thatched house this is how paddy is cultivated in sir lanka.

Two asses

Once upon a time there were two asses. One was loaded with salt and the other was loaded with sponge.
One the way they had to cross a steam. So they thought a while and the one who was loaded with salt told to the other I will go first.
You come after me. So suing it waded in the steam.
Suddenly it was stumbling over a stone and fell in to the water a part of the salt was dissolved so the other ass noticed this.
After felling this ass got up very easily because it was use burden some. So it crossed the stream very easily.
The other ass did the same thing. Instead of dissolve a great quantity of water soak up in to the sponge.
Then the weight was double. It couldn’t even stand the same stream relieved cone and drowned the other.
