         Iodine deficiency occurs mainly in hilly or flood prone areas, where iodine tends to be washed out of the soil. In total about 1.6 billion people (30% of the world’s population) are at risk of getting Iodine deficiency diso rders.( IDD)        

       An inexpensive solution has been in use, since the 1992s. To overcome this problem in the developed world. That is the addition of iodine to the one item consumed by all, common salt. But in the developing world this problem has been all owed to continue, condemning millions of children to cretinism, tens of millions to mental retardation and hundreds of millions to lesser mental and physical problems.

         On 20th September 1990, the world summit for children adopted a resolution to eliminate all new cases of Iodine Deficiency Disorders through the iodization of salt. Today a decade later, how close are we to achieving this goal!.
